Seeing Your Baby Before Birth

There are few moments in life as emotionally profound as seeing your child's face for the first time. For generations of parents, that moment came in the delivery room. Today, advances in ultrasound technology make it possible for expectant families to see their baby yawn, smile, suck their thumb, and respond to sound — months before birth. 4D ultrasound makes that experience possible in a way that no previous technology could replicate, and at Elevate Health and Wellness, we are proud to offer this technology to Gulf Coast families in Gautier, MS and Foley, AL.

What Makes 4D Ultrasound Different

Standard 2D obstetric ultrasound produces flat, cross-sectional grayscale images that are clinically invaluable but difficult for non-specialists to interpret emotionally. 3D ultrasound adds a third dimension to create still three-dimensional renderings of the baby's surface features — producing recognizable images of faces, hands, and feet. 4D ultrasound adds the dimension of time — producing live, moving video of the baby in three dimensions at a rate of approximately 25 to 30 frames per second. The result is a real-time window into the baby's world — watching them open and close their mouth, move their arms and legs, respond to external stimuli, and display the early facial expressions that families find so powerfully humanizing.

The Best Time for 4D Ultrasound

The optimal window for 4D elective ultrasound is between 26 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. During this period, the baby has developed enough facial fat and tissue to produce clearly recognizable facial features and expressions, while still having sufficient amniotic fluid and space to move freely and position themselves for optimal imaging. Before 26 weeks, the baby's face may lack the subcutaneous fat that makes features distinctive. After 34 weeks, the baby has descended into the pelvis and the reduced amniotic fluid and limited space can make optimal imaging more challenging. Twins can be imaged slightly earlier — between 22 and 28 weeks — for the best results.

What to Expect During Your Session at Elevate

4D ultrasound sessions at Elevate Health and Wellness are designed to be relaxed, unhurried, and genuinely celebratory. Sessions typically last 30 to 45 minutes and are performed in a comfortable setting where partners, family members, and older siblings are welcome to attend. Kristy Beard, MSN, APRN, FNP-C or her trained sonography staff perform the examination, narrating what is being seen in real time and optimizing the imaging position to capture the clearest possible view of your baby. Digital images and video clips are provided for families to keep. In the rare event that baby is in an unfavorable position, we will make every effort to coax repositioning and schedule a complimentary repeat session if needed.

Combining Elective and Diagnostic Ultrasound

At Elevate, elective 4D ultrasound can be combined with clinical assessment of fetal wellbeing — including basic biometry, amniotic fluid assessment, and placental location review — providing both the emotional bonding experience and basic clinical reassurance in a single visit. Patients who have had their anatomy scan elsewhere and simply want the elective bonding experience are equally welcome.
