Heart Health Screening: What Every Gulf Coast Adult Should Know

The Gulf Coast Cardiovascular Crisis

Mississippi and Alabama consistently rank among the states with the highest rates of cardiovascular disease mortality in the nation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death in both states — accounting for more deaths annually than any other condition. The underlying risk factors — obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, physical inactivity, and smoking — are all highly prevalent on the Gulf Coast.

The most dangerous aspect of cardiovascular disease is that it develops silently. Many patients who suffer a first heart attack or stroke had no idea they were at significant risk. That is exactly why comprehensive cardiovascular screening is a core component of preventive care at Elevate Health and Wellness.

Standard Cardiovascular Screening

A standard lipid panel measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. The American Heart Association recommends cholesterol screening at least every four to six years starting at age 20 — more frequently with risk factors. Blood pressure monitoring is equally essential, as hypertension silently damages arteries, the heart, and kidneys for years before any symptom appears.

Advanced Cardiovascular Screening at Elevate

At Elevate, Kristy Beard, MSN, APRN, FNP-C goes beyond the standard lipid panel for patients with elevated risk. This includes the NMR LipoProfile — which measures LDL particle number and size, far more predictive of cardiovascular events than standard LDL alone. We also evaluate high-sensitivity CRP for arterial inflammation, homocysteine levels, lipoprotein(a), HbA1c, and a comprehensive metabolic panel to assess kidney function in the context of cardiac risk.

Vascular Screening Ultrasound

For patients over 40 with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, Kristy may recommend a carotid artery ultrasound to screen for early plaque buildup, or an abdominal aortic ultrasound to screen for aneurysm. These studies are non-invasive, use no radiation, and can identify life-threatening vascular disease years before symptoms develop.
