Summer Illnesses on the Gulf Coast: When to Seek Same-Day Care
Written by Kristy Beard, MSN, APRN, FNP-C — Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Founder of Elevate Health and Wellness, serving patients across the Gulf Coast in Gautier, MS and Foley, AL.
Summer Illness Is Real — Even in the Heat
Most people associate cold and flu season with winter — but Gulf Coast summers have their own predictable pattern of illness. Respiratory viruses, gastrointestinal infections, ear infections, urinary tract infections, and heat-related illness all peak during the summer months in Mississippi and Alabama. Knowing when symptoms warrant same-day evaluation — versus rest and fluids at home — can make a meaningful difference in how quickly you recover.
Most Common Summer Illnesses on the Gulf Coast
Respiratory infections including summer colds and rhinovirus circulate year-round in the South, with indoor air conditioning creating shared air environments that facilitate transmission. Strep throat peaks in summer as children gather in camps and recreational programs. Otitis externa — swimmer's ear — is extremely common during summer months when Gulf Coast residents spend more time in pools, lakes, and the Gulf. Urinary tract infections are more frequent in summer due to increased sweating and dehydration. Gastrointestinal illness from foodborne pathogens — particularly salmonella, E. coli, and norovirus — spikes with summer cookouts and outdoor eating. Heat exhaustion and dehydration require prompt evaluation when accompanied by altered mental status, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of heat stroke.
When to Come to Elevate for Same-Day Urgent Care
Elevate Health and Wellness provides same-day urgent care for ear infections and swimmer's ear, strep throat and pharyngitis evaluation, sinus infections and upper respiratory illness, urinary tract infections with culture and sensitivity testing, gastrointestinal illness requiring evaluation and hydration support, skin infections and rashes including cellulitis and contact dermatitis, and mild to moderate heat exhaustion requiring IV hydration. Kristy Beard, MSN, APRN, FNP-C can order diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and arrange follow-up care — all in one visit.
When to Go Directly to the ER
Seek emergency care immediately for signs of heat stroke including high body temperature with confusion, loss of consciousness, or seizure; severe dehydration with inability to keep any fluids down; signs of sepsis including fever with rapid heart rate, confusion, and low blood pressure; difficulty breathing; or chest pain. These are emergencies that require immediate intervention beyond what urgent care can provide.
Telehealth Summer Urgent Care
For conditions that can be safely evaluated without a physical examination — including uncomplicated UTI symptoms, mild upper respiratory illness, and medication management questions — Elevate offers telehealth urgent care visits across Mississippi and Alabama. This is particularly convenient during summer when getting to the clinic may be challenging.
