What Your Thyroid Does

Your thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism, energy, body temperature, heart rate, mood, and cognitive function. When it works well, you rarely notice it. When it doesn't, the effects can ripple through virtually every system in your body. The American Thyroid Association estimates that 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease — and up to 60% are unaware of their condition.

Hypothyroidism: When the Thyroid Is Underactive

Hypothyroidism — an underactive thyroid — is the most common thyroid disorder, affecting women at a rate 5 to 8 times higher than men. Symptoms include persistent fatigue, unexplained weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, dry skin and hair, hair loss, brain fog, depression, and slow heart rate. Many of these symptoms overlap with other conditions, which is why testing is essential rather than treating based on symptoms alone.

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: The Autoimmune Cause

The most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States is Hashimoto's thyroiditis — an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks thyroid tissue. It can be present and active for years before TSH becomes abnormal. Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibody testing identifies Hashimoto's early, allowing for treatment of the autoimmune process before significant thyroid damage occurs.

Hyperthyroidism: When the Thyroid Is Overactive

Hyperthyroidism — an overactive thyroid — produces the opposite constellation of symptoms: unintentional weight loss, rapid or irregular heartbeat, heat intolerance, anxiety, tremor, and excessive sweating. Graves' disease, the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, is also autoimmune in nature. Untreated hyperthyroidism can lead to serious cardiovascular complications including atrial fibrillation.

How Elevate Evaluates Thyroid Health

At Elevate Health and Wellness, Kristy Beard, MSN, APRN, FNP-C evaluates thyroid health with a comprehensive panel including TSH, Free T4, Free T3, TPO antibodies, and thyroglobulin antibodies — and interprets the results in the context of your complete symptom picture and health history. A thyroid that is technically 'in range' but suboptimal for your individual physiology deserves attention and follow-up.
