Two Medications. One Goal.

Over the past several years, GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy has transformed the medical weight loss landscape. Two medications in particular have generated significant clinical attention: semaglutide and tirzepatide. Both are highly effective. Both are available at Elevate Health and Wellness in Gautier, MS and Foley, AL. And both work through mechanisms that address the biology of weight gain rather than simply restricting behavior. But they are not identical — and understanding the differences can help patients and providers make a more informed treatment decision.

How Semaglutide Works

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — it mimics the action of glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone naturally released by the gut after eating. GLP-1 signals the brain to reduce appetite, slows gastric emptying to prolong feelings of fullness, and helps regulate blood sugar by stimulating insulin release in a glucose-dependent manner. A landmark trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine (Wilding et al., 2021) demonstrated an average weight loss of 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks in adults with obesity.

How Tirzepatide Works Differently

Tirzepatide is a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist — meaning it activates both the GLP-1 pathway and the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) pathway simultaneously. GIP is another incretin hormone that, when activated alongside GLP-1, appears to produce additive effects on appetite suppression, fat metabolism, and insulin sensitivity. A landmark trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine (Jastreboff et al., 2022) demonstrated weight loss of up to 22.5% of body weight over 72 weeks — significantly exceeding the results seen with semaglutide in comparable trials.

Which Is Right for You?

The choice between semaglutide and tirzepatide depends on multiple factors including your health history, your response to prior treatments, your insurance coverage, your tolerance for side effects, and your weight loss goals. At Elevate, Kristy Beard, MSN, APRN, FNP-C evaluates each patient comprehensively before making a recommendation — and she monitors your response to whatever therapy is chosen with regular lab work and follow-up visits to ensure the plan is working and safe.
