When Can You Find Out the Sex of Your Baby on Ultrasound?

One of the most eagerly anticipated moments in pregnancy is learning the sex of your baby — and ultrasound remains the most accessible and widely used method for making that determination. The reliability of sex determination by ultrasound depends primarily on gestational age, fetal position, and the quality of the imaging equipment being used. Fetal genitalia begin differentiating around weeks 11 to 14, but reliable external identification on standard 2D ultrasound is typically possible beginning around 16 weeks — with accuracy improving significantly between 18 and 22 weeks. At Elevate Health and Wellness, gender reveal ultrasounds are typically scheduled between 16 and 20 weeks for the most reliable results.

How Sex Is Determined on Ultrasound

In male fetuses, the penis and scrotum become visible as distinct external structures from approximately 16 weeks onward. In female fetuses, the labia and absence of a visible phallus are the identifying features. The angle of the genital tubercle relative to the spine — a technique called the 'angle of the dangle' — can sometimes provide directional information as early as 12 to 14 weeks, though with lower reliability than later imaging. Fetal position is the most significant limiting factor — a baby who is not in an optimal position for the ultrasound view may not allow reliable sex determination regardless of gestational age. In these cases, a repeat scan or an elective 3D/4D session at a later date typically resolves the question.

The Elective Gender Reveal Experience at Elevate

At Elevate Health and Wellness, gender reveal ultrasound sessions are designed to be relaxed, unhurried, and genuinely celebratory. Unlike a clinical diagnostic scan where efficiency is prioritized, our elective ultrasound sessions give families time to absorb the experience, ask questions, capture images and video, and enjoy this milestone together. We can provide sealed results for families who want to maintain the surprise for a gender reveal event — or share the news in real time in the room with partners, family members, or anyone the expectant parents want to include.

Combining Gender Reveal with Diagnostic Ultrasound

For patients receiving their anatomy scan (the comprehensive fetal structural survey typically performed between 18 and 22 weeks) at Elevate, sex determination can be incorporated into that visit — combining the clinical evaluation with the excitement of learning your baby's sex in a single appointment. Patients who have already had their anatomy scan elsewhere may schedule a standalone elective gender reveal session at our Gautier, MS or Foley, AL location.

A Note on Accuracy

Ultrasound sex determination is highly accurate when performed at appropriate gestational ages by experienced sonographers — with published accuracy rates exceeding 99% after 18 weeks in optimal imaging conditions. However, no ultrasound is 100% guaranteed, and fetal position limitations can occasionally result in an uncertain or incorrect initial determination. Kristy Beard, MSN, APRN, FNP-C is transparent about the confidence level of the determination at each specific examination.
