The Rural Healthcare Crisis on the Gulf Coast

Rural Mississippi and Alabama face some of the most severe healthcare access disparities in the United States. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Mississippi has more federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas per capita than almost any other state — with dozens of rural counties having fewer than one primary care provider per 3,500 residents. In Alabama, rural Baldwin, Clarke, Monroe, and Choctaw counties all have documented primary care shortages. For patients in these communities, accessing a qualified healthcare provider has historically meant hours of driving, days of waiting, and often choosing between their health and their livelihood.

What Telehealth Makes Possible for Rural Patients

Telehealth eliminates the distance barrier completely. A patient in rural George County, Mississippi or rural Escambia County, Alabama can have a comprehensive evaluation with Kristy Beard, MSN, APRN, FNP-C at Elevate Health and Wellness from their home, their car, or their workplace — with no travel time, no waiting room, and no need to take a full day off work. The clinical quality of a telehealth visit with a skilled nurse practitioner is equivalent to an in-person visit for a wide range of conditions — and for many patients, the reduced barriers to access mean they actually seek care sooner and more regularly than they would otherwise.

What Rural Patients Can Access Through Elevate Telehealth

Through telehealth visits with Elevate, rural Mississippi and Alabama patients can access comprehensive primary care consultations, hormone evaluation and management including thyroid and reproductive hormones, medical weight loss consultations and ongoing GLP-1 medication management, lab ordering with blood draws at local facilities, telehealth urgent care for common illnesses including UTIs, sinus infections, and respiratory illness, medication management and prescription refills, nutritional counseling and supplement guidance, and mental health screening and referral coordination. Lab results are reviewed via follow-up telehealth visits, and prescriptions are sent electronically to the patient's preferred pharmacy.

Insurance Coverage for Telehealth in Mississippi and Alabama

Both Mississippi and Alabama have telehealth parity laws requiring insurance companies to cover telehealth visits at equivalent rates to in-person care for covered services. Medicaid programs in both states cover telehealth for a broad range of services. Elevate accepts most major insurance plans and Medicaid. Cash-pay options are available for uninsured patients or those whose specific plans do not cover telehealth for particular services.

In-Person Follow-Up When Needed

When a clinical situation requires physical examination, diagnostic ultrasound, IV therapy, or in-office lab draws, Elevate's Gautier, MS and Foley, AL clinic locations are available for in-person visits. Kristy coordinates seamlessly between telehealth and in-person care to ensure rural patients receive the complete clinical support they need regardless of geography.
